Sanctuaire plot
Between 1983 and 1986, the French Basque Country and Bayonne were the setting for a series of attacks perpetrated by the GAL (Grupos Antiterroristas de Liberación) on suspected or otherwise alleged members of ETA (a terrorist organization seeking to establish an independent, socialist Basque state). These settlements were organized by the Spanish police with French accomplices. They were intended to shut down ETA's "refuge" in France. Against this background, two opponents learned to know and respect each other despite all the differences.
