Ring of the Nibelungs plot

"The Nordic legend that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to write the Lord of the Ring trilogy."

Northern Europe, 1500 years ago. When the evil twins Thorkilt and Thorkwin betray and murder King Siegmund, the prince of Xanten, his wife Siegland at the last minute manages to smuggle their young son Siegfried out of the castle and put them in a boat on the river. He is pulled from the water by Eyvind, a gunsmith who is raising Siegfried as his own son. For years, Siegfried goes through life as Eric, unaware of his fate as a royal heir. While searching for his true identity, Siegfried ends up in the kingdom of Burgund, where he wins the respect of King Gunther and the love of his sister Kriemhild by slaying the dragon Fafnir. He considers the gold and jewels he finds in the dragon's cave to be his victory booty, despite the warnings of the Nibelungs, the spirits who guard the treasure.

Definitely a fun movie. The special effects are decent and by the way this is a miniseries, not some big budget Hollywood movie. I read that the budget was $23 million and they did a great job with that. Fairly true to the Nibelungenlied, though I'm more familiar with the Völsunga Saga, the Norse variant (read in Tolkien's book Legende van Sigurd & Gudrún). Strong actors like Max Von Sydow, Samuel West (who played King before, namely King Caspian in the BBC series Voyage Of The Dawn Treader).
Decent sword fights, beautiful women. And a lot of drama, as was the custom in the past. They didn't know happy endings then. Benno Fürmann was also in place as the sympathetic Siegfried, who unfortunately perishes due to the conspiracies of others.
A decent film adaptation of one of the oldest European stories.

Interesting saga that deals inventively with locations, images and story. Time must be taken to experience the story, because the film/series lasts 3 hours and it doesn't always look spectacular (read: the special effects are basic). But the print contains enough fantasy to delight the fans. In addition to the unknown protagonist, we also find Kristanna Loken, good old Max Von Sydow and the then insignificant Robert Pattinson in the cast. A mishmash that does contain its charm.
