Quicksand plot

Mary is the wife of cashier Jim Bowen. John Boland owns a café frequented by Alan Perry, the down-on-his-luck son of Bowen's employer. When Bowen validates a fraudulent check from Perry, he is arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. Mary then applies to Boland to become a singer in his café. He is secretly in love with Mary and hopes she will leave her husband for him. Perry falls for Mary too and follows her home the night her husband escapes from prison.
