Play It As It Lays plot
"Maria's life was a search for the ultimate answer even after she found there was none."
Maria Wyeth, an ex-model and actress in second-rate films, is admitted to a hospital for the mentally ill after traumatic events. She is married to the unfaithful Carter Lane, a director who has only time for herself and has neglected her years. Maria becomes involved in a series of brief love affairs and becomes pregnant. Her husband leaves her and she decides to have an abortion. Her only friend she can turn to is BZ, a gay film producer. But the man is tired of life and proposes to her to commit suicide with him.
