Good film in which an elderly couple has a free relationship. A story that is stretched a bit long, but in which the characters and their mutual relationships come to the fore well. Ingrid Bergman, Yves Montand and Anthony Perkins all deliver excellent roles.

Ingrid Bergman plays Paula Tassier, a middle-aged woman whose relationship with playboy Roger Demarest [Yves Montand] is not exactly going well: he is often away for long periods of time and does not hesitate to show himself in public with other, much younger women . Tassier is initially delighted when she meets Philip van der Besh [Anthony Perkins], a young lawyer who is head over heels in love with her and gives her the attention she craves. But who is her true love now?

The material is not very deep and Montand does not seem to take the film very seriously. Ingrid Bergman is good (but not great) in her role, but it is Anthony Perkins who saves this film from mediocrity and oblivion with a performance that won him a Palme d'Or. Producer/director Anatole Litvak shows little inspiration and seems to have simply filmed the scenario as it is on paper. The lack of visual inventiveness and the excessive length of the film make this a minor disappointment.

Ingrid Bergman plays a woman who has to choose between a man her own age and a much younger man. Yves Montand plays the somewhat dull older partner, who is himself unfaithful. He gives all his young mistresses the same name, as if they are interchangeable. Anthony Perkins plays the short guy who has yet to be initiated.

It is based on a novel by Françoise Sagan, who may have included autobiographical elements. The title is a question from the young lover. In a literal sense he invites her to a classical concert, but in a metaphorical sense it is a proposal. The third movement of Brahms's Third Symphony is included in the concert, but the same melody is also sung by Diahann Carroll in the nightclub and played by the dance orchestra when they waltz together. It is romance with a gloomy side.
