Beautiful debut film by Roeg who immediately convinced me of his ability.

It's amazing how the film is so clear at the beginning, only to completely devolve into the surrealism and hallucinatory atmosphere of Turner's house in the second half. The camerawork is sublime, and the mirrors are particularly striking. This is clearly visible at the end, for example, when Chas appears to have been apprehended by his ex-partners. Then we see Chas in the car with the reflection of Turner's face. Pure mindfuck

Great acting, brilliant scenes, (At the end of the mushroom trip when Turner is singing with that light stick, for example) amazing cinematography, good music, and a strong story make this film a classic. Next on the list is Walkabout and 4.5* for Performance

Nicolas Roeg is one of the most interesting British directors. He made his first film, "Performance," with Donald Cammell, and starred alongside James Fox, Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, and Nina Pallenberg, Keith Richards' then-girlfriend. Jagger and Pallenberg reportedly rehearsed the already quite explicit sex scenes so thoroughly that Richards was assigned to stand guard on set. The final result of "Performance" was so shocking that the film company Warner (who had expected a kind of Stones version of "A Hard Days' Night") initially refused to release it. Besides the naked flesh, there was also the raw violence, excessive drug use, and psychedelic imagery that were quite groundbreaking. Jagger's first solo hit, "Memo From Turner," was culled from this film.

A famous and infamous film, the first film by director Roeg, also the first film by the enigmatic director Donald Cammell. Infamous perhaps mainly for the stories about Jagger, Pallenberg, and Richards, famous for what you see of Pallenberg and Jagger—except that by today's standards, that hardly makes an impression.

Still, all of that really raises expectations. But to make a long story short, I don't really see it. Yes, it's an eccentric affair, but that's been far surpassed by countless other films that pretend to be in the same world. Perhaps partly copied from this film, but still. And Pallenberg? She's certainly not ugly or anything—although, that haircut—but I wouldn't exactly go out of my way for her.

I think the later films by both Roeg and Cammell are truly on a whole other level. And yes, you might already see a spark. But for me, that's all it is.
