It is the summer of 1948. Alan is fourteen years old and his greatest wish is to kiss his classmate Ann, the girl of his dreams. However, he lacks courage and so he asks for advice from janitor and war hero Tommy. When Alan's English teacher, Miss Land, gives him the lead role in a school play and the lyrics tell him to kiss his co-star Ann, his dream seems to come true. During the performance, however, he loses his courage.
