Essentially, a sketch of the mores of English society when divorce was still socially unacceptable, prompting Sir Gerald Corven to do everything in his power to shift the blame onto his innocent wife, Clare. From that perspective, the film is indeed dated, but as a spectacle it's still worth watching thanks to the pacing, the dialogue, and especially the performances. Diana Wynyard plays Clare Corven, but as the cunning Sir Gerald, Colin Clive, as usual, steals the show, and when you see his grim face, you can easily imagine this being someone who's been beating his wife with a riding crop. In the film's slightly lighter first half, director James Whale also gives ample space to the actress listed as "Mrs. Patrick Campbell," who delivers all the funny theatrics and one-liners, almost making you forget Clare Corven's predicament. As mentioned, the plot is dated, but it still has a flair that makes this old film more than worth watching, and for fans of old cinema, it's also chock-full of well-known English supporting actors. (I can't explain the title based on the plot, by the way.)

Based on the final installment in John Galsworthy's extensive Forsyte Chronicles series of novels, James Whale shot this film in between the quartet on which his fame would rest: Frankenstein (with Clive and Boris Karloff), The Old Dark House (1931-1935), The Invisible Man (1935), and The Bride of Frankenstein (1931-1935). His non-horror films certainly demonstrate that he was equally at home in many other genres.
