Pretty nice film, but especially as long as we spend as much time as possible on the mountain side. The political context and romance aren't particularly interesting, but the film peaks in the middle part as far as I'm concerned - during the actual ascent of the not very high, but very steep and bleak North Face of the Eiger. There are fantastic images, with gaping holes and impressive depths to be conquered. Even as soon as things start to go wrong with avalanches, storms and seriously injured climbers I was fascinated to watch. The last half hour, when the ultimately futile rescue mission of Louise and associates is deployed did not count. Ultimately, a film that relies on strong climbing scenes and extremely beautiful mountain images - and that's actually not that bad.

Lots of ingredients, but just not the right mix.

Nice, and incidentally true, story revolves around Andi and Toni. A run that takes some time, but eventually both gentlemen arrive at the foot of the Eiger. By the way, I read an article in National Geographic about the two men and their journey years ago, something that immediately interested me. The lead up to the climb itself with the recon, the hassle with Luise and the downright shocking Arau and the take off is no less interesting. And after a smooth start, problems loom on the horizon, partly due to bad decisions, bad luck and nature itself.

The climbing statues themselves are beautiful, the Eiger surrounded by clouds, then calm and stately, later menacing and capricious, and the images of the surroundings are mouth-wateringly beautiful. Add to that an appropriate soundtrack with an ominous melody and the film has won me over to a large extent.

But still, during and after the film I have very little interest in Der Andi and Der Toni. I don't feel like I know either gentleman, a reason why the agony doesn't affect me much on an empathic level. Luise's love for Toni then adds a kind of handle in terms of compassion, but in terms of depth and sympathy for the two gentlemen, the film lacks a lot.

Nordwand is, after all, a very nice film that mainly has to rely on visual splendor, but in my opinion it lacks a lot in terms of characters and story and after that it mainly has to have hardships. Very nice, for once, but not really great.

1936: The Nazis have come to power and the Olympics are approaching. Physical superiority is a favorite theme in Nazi ideology. In this sphere of influence, some Germans decide to climb one of the least accessible and never conquered mountains; the inhospitable north face of the Eiger in Switzerland. A journalist friend who works for a newspaper annexed by the Nazis joins the expedition. It is almost impossible to conquer the Nordwand and the weather conditions are never favourable. There is a chance of a heady snow storm high in the mountains and there is a risk of avalanche. Nothing prevents the men from starting their gruesome and above all life-threatening mission. This results in cringingly exciting mountaineering scenes.

The panoramic images are breathtaking.
