The fragmentary narrative without a clear storyline and plot underlines that it is the film adaptation of a diary about the horrors that the women of Berlin endured during the conquest of their city by the Red Army. The misconduct of the soldiers is of all times. To make a comparison, the Dutch military also went wild in the former Dutch East Indies at the time.

The anonymous woman’s idea of seeking protection from an officer in exchange for sex after a series of rapes shows a healthy survival instinct: “Ich entscheide, wer mich bekommt.” That the women, in the midst of their horrors, laugh at the number of times they have been raped is an equally human reaction when so much violence and misery defines daily life.

A confronting film by Max Färberböck about bestial behavior or as Major Andrey puts it: “Bestien. Oder Tiere, wie Sie sagen.” and an attempt to arm yourself against it. Raw and disturbing, not only because of the story, but also because of the convincing acting and the horrifying decors of the bombed-out Berlin. A courageous film about a courageous, resolute woman.

Hard and shocking film. Yet another aspect of WWII that leaves you with nothing but horror.

Despite the knowledge of the story and the impression it leaves, too long. Some scenes seem to repeat themselves, even though one was already powerful enough. Sometimes also a bit confused and a smooth transition between the scenes was sometimes also lacking.

Heartbreaking images of Berlin shot to pieces and the suffering of the residents who remained and had actually already escaped death.

The atmosphere among the victors is also remarkable, because despite their disrespectful urge for revenge and entertainment, there is still much mutual disagreement, loss of hierarchical values and doubts.

Like the film, the acting is good, but not exceptional.
