Next Life plot

A Buddhist family, long exiled in California, must prepare for the father's journey to the afterlife. The customs and traditions—and the visiting monks—form both a contrast and a strange harmony with the typical American middle-class lifestyle the family has come to lead. The family's desire to return to Tibet seems unattainable in many ways, so they find solace in the Buddhist teachings of death and rebirth, and in the belief that he will be reborn as a bird in Tibet in his next life.
