In the noisy red light district of Seoul, brutal pimp Han-Gi (Cho Je-Hyun) has a bizarre love affair with hooker Sun-Hwa (Seo Won). Han-Gi forced the student into prostitution through blackmail, after she had rejected him on the street earlier. He wants to control and humiliate her at all costs; to this end he secretly spies on her and her customers from behind a false mirror. But her revenge is anything but sweet. Sun-Hwa becomes popular and turns Han-Gi's cronies against him. After a series of horrific events, the two realize that they are doomed to each other and can only move forward with each other's survivability.

Revised and found slightly less.
The film is clearly older, although Ki-duk still made some masterpieces around that time that did survive. Judging by my previous review, this time I found the music slightly less and visually it just went a step backwards. It's those details that make it that little bit less special.
Because there is certainly still plenty to enjoy. Engaging characters and an intriguing story. I'm not a pure drama fan, but Ki-duk is one of the few directors who constantly knows how to put interesting characters in his films. Here, too, the provoked love story is easily captivating, not nothing with two not too sympathetic main characters.
Furthermore, a film that flows nicely and especially towards the end has a few beautiful scenes in store. It was pretty close, but in the end I only took half off, because the level was slightly lower than I remembered over the entire film. But absolutely worth it, especially if you haven't seen it yet.

This movie is very slow and not always interesting. The way Sun-Hwa is forced to let her first 'customers' take her is pretty hard to watch. By the way, Won Seo is a very beautiful girl, who seems very fragile. The boy who has an obsession for her and who continues to spy on her sickly, seems to be numb and unable to express his crush in a normal way. Both the bad guy and the 'innocent' girl (actually not that innocent because a thief) are well portrayed, vulnerable but sometimes their actions are hard to understand and it is hard to empathize with them. Why isn't the girl trying to escape? How can she fall in love with the boy who brought her into prostitution? Stockholm Syndrome? Why is the boy silent for most of the movie instead of declaring his love to her, ashamed of his high-pitched voice? And how can he miraculously survive every attempt on his life?

I think most would agree that that Seo Won is dazzling. In addition to her beauty, she also contains an aura of vulnerability and charisma at the same time. She also appeared in Kim ki-duk's Seom, but otherwise her oeuvre is meager.
Two bizarre main characters who Kim ki-duk conjures up from his hat and develops further. Sun-hwa who evolves as a fragile bird into a destructive prostitute and is left with a kind of Stockholm syndrome. The taciturn Han-ki understands only one language and that is that of violence. His companions tolerate his behavior out of fear. Later it becomes clear for a moment why he is so silent. You'd shut up for less. Tragic and it is an explanation of his subcutaneous feeling of inferiority.
It's just a shame that our fighter has amazing powers, because after a few hits, his immunity seems to be otherworldly. I would rather have seen it differently. The focus of the film is also entirely on the prostitution district. From the outside (concerned family, police ...) no trace.
