1890. Julie (Jessica Chastain) is the daughter of an Anglo-Irish aristocrat who is the Earl of County Fermanagh. One summer evening, Julie tries to seduce her father's servant Jean (Colin Farrell). The affair quickly takes on a dark side as power and prestige begin to play a role.

After nine collaborations with the quintessential Swedish director, Liv Ullmann doesn't have to look far for inspiration for this kind of 'huis clos' drama. One might therefore expect her to possess the necessary baggage for an old-fashioned dose of philosophical musing, provided it bears her own stamp, of course. She undoubtedly succeeds in this, though not exactly in a positive sense. Miss Julie turns out to be a ludicrous spectacle of class struggle, unrequited love, and lost faith, all wrapped up in a love triangle that never translates into the necessary friction and underlying tension. The main culprit for this is the grossly overacting duo Farrell and Chastain. Samantha Morton certainly saves the day with a composed performance. Next time, perhaps move away from the past, dear Liv.
