Julio (Bembol Roco), a poor fisherman from the countryside, comes to Manila to search for his lost love, Ligaya (Hilda Koronel). He works on a construction site and experiences unfair working conditions. He also comes into contact with a group of male prostitutes. Then he finds out that Ligaya has been conscripted by a brothel and tries to free her.

There is still more going on than what has been stated here. Although it is indeed not the first film loosely based on Orpheus and Eurydice and it is also true that Scorsese and Schrader saw this film before making Taxi Driver. And Schrader's Hardcore is not far away either. Thanks to the World Cinema Foundation of the former, it has all been restored. Even if Scorsese had never made a film, the world owes him eternal thanks for that foundation alone, and neorealism is indeed an influence on this.
