Lola vers la Mer plot

Lola, an 18-year-old blonde, lives in foster care with Samir, her only friend. Impulsive and lonely, she tries to get her diploma as a veterinary assistant. When her mother Catherine dies, her father Philippe makes sure that Lola will have to miss the funeral ceremony. Two years earlier, Philippe threw her out of the parental home because she is transsexual. Philippe is determined to fulfill Catherine's dying wish: that her ashes be scattered in the North Sea and in the dunes near her parental home.

Following Girl (2018), this is a Walloon equivalent on transsexuality. Where we still find a compliant understanding father and even environment in Girl, the understanding is less great here. It is the common thread throughout the film in which the deceased mother is the only thing that keeps them together. There are already deep wounds that cannot simply be erased.

What follows is an interesting portrait between father and daughter/son. It is a serene film, hard and tender at the same time, in which people each go in search of love and security. The film seems sincere and has some nice scenes. Great acting and a great ending do the rest for this enjoyable film. Not the best, but certainly more than decent. Nice to have seen.

I already suspected beforehand that I would like this film about the tense relationship between a father and his transgender son/daughter. That came true. I think it's a beautiful film with an overall endearing drama. Compliments from Mya Bollaers, who credibly portrays her complicated role. Not an absolute winner, but very nice.

The title is a phonetic find.

In itself a beautiful portrait and visually nice, but the film gets stuck in clichés and thus never manages to surprise or fascinate. The film is presented as a road trip to the North Sea coast, but why that can't just be done in a three-hour drive has remained unknown to me. Nicely played, but the actors do not manage to save the weak script either. 2.5*.
