Beautiful landscapes. Atmospheric music. And a series of interesting moral-existentialist dilemmas…which law should a person obey?...be the link in an unjust order?...or try to live according to one's own ethical system, in which life itself is the highest good?...can one, however, escape something as overwhelmingly unjust as a war between rebels and colonials, between freedom fighters and oppressors?...but what if they in turn subsidize the noble popular upliftment of a teacher in a deserted place?...and what if in the meantime, during the entire quest, there are still victims, what do good and evil mean then?...and and and, can a person live “loin des hommes”, withdraw from existence, or must a choice be made sooner or later…?

So interesting. Although also too slow. To the rhythm of life there, step by step, foot by foot…and that is exactly what I could not go along with. The loose ends, the little psychological-anecdotal background of the characters, the stripped down that the whole film is looking for…it felt rather stiff to me in the long run. So 2.5*.

A somber film that focuses on a quest of two men and is set in an imposing and barren mountain landscape. And all this against the background of the Algerian secession struggle in the 1950s.

The story develops slowly. The characters do not reveal much. Here and there a bit of life history, but (almost) never the whole story. The viewer has to largely fill in the blanks in the life stories themselves. The characters get to know each other and slowly grow towards each other. However, the viewer does not grow along. He remains contemplative at a distance.

The characters behave rather resignedly. They accept their fate. Even if that fate does not correspond to the plans or wishes made. Oh well, it comes as it comes. Man weighs...etc. Emotion and defense are of little use. Just swallow and continue.

Not a cheerful subject. Fascinating though.

Good acting by Mortensen and Kateb. Somber, slow and distant. Just like the film.

A Western about morality, justice and masculinity in the run-up to the Algerian Civil War, a historical event that would mark a definitive break with French colonialism. Viggo Mortensen plays a primary school teacher who has renounced the clash of arms and his military service, but is still officially employed by the colonial government. When a villager (Reda Kateb) accused of murder is delivered to this Daru, the Frenchman must decide whether to deliver the branded man to the authorities or have him lynched by his fellow villagers. In 'Loin des Hommes' (2014), David Oelhoffen brings the barren desert landscape to life as a character in itself, as a silent witness to the human turmoil and sudden changes of power. It is sensual cinema full of beautiful atmospheric images with silent men who grow closer to each other, or have to make inhuman decisions because the extreme circumstances force them to do so. War brings out the best and the worst in people. Although it is a bit orientalist how a white Viggo Mortensen is 'the righteous figure' who takes pity on the fate of an outcast. Goodness is a spark of Western civilization in an uncivilized wasteland, even during the last throes of colonialism.
