Intense and raw drama about three refugees who end up in France and end up in the rain from the rain. From the civil war in Sri Lanka to the drug war in the lawless banlieue. In addition to the stressful environment, the difficult mutual relationships also cause the necessary tensions. Despite the differences in character, a certain form of camaraderie gradually arises in the midst of all the violence , a pre-announcement of the final scene. Contrary to some of the comments above, the ending didn't bother me at all. If you take a taxi somewhere in the world in a big city, there is a good chance that the driver is an ex-refugee. And it could very well be that he (or she) is now happily married.

My third Audiard after Un Prophète and De Rouille et d'Os. I think this is his best so far, because Jacques Audiard puts the emphasis on the character drawings and human drama and not so much on the almost inevitable violence. And I think the protagonists, given their lack of experience, do a great job. I can very well believe that this film won the Palme d'Or last year.

Surprisingly good actually. I'm not a big fan of Audiard, mainly because of the kind of stories he tells. Dheepan is much more interesting in that respect than his earlier work. Without sentiment, the new life in France of a former Tamil Tiger and his wife and child is convincingly depicted, in name then. Gradually, Dheepan takes a turn for the worse, turning from a docile and adaptive janitor, back to what he was before. I had no trouble at all with the last part of the film. In fact, the style of the film, with the camera often close to the skin of the characters or so far away that the viewer never really has an overview of the situation, is consistent across the board and is fully exploited here. Both the style and the development also make Dheepan more than a film about immigration. Only the final scene is left, Audiard should have cut it off after the taxi.

Picked this one up and didn't really know what to expect. I certainly didn't think it was a bad movie. The cast wasn't bad and the movie didn't look bad. The story wasn't bad, but it wasn't really wow either. Luckily enough happened to keep it interesting. Worth a look, but not a masterpiece.
