A very complicated beginning of a film that then becomes a chronicle of an unpleasant family.

The title is certainly meant ironically, as the film is nothing like a Christmas fairy tale, but instead features heavy-handed dialogue and unedifying situations.

A whole bunch of top French actors are taking part, and I remember the difficult role played by Anne Consigny, but especially the incredibly beautiful performance by Mathieu Amalric, definitely one of the most versatile French actors of the moment.

With a little less complexity and not being drawn out so long, the film would have scored higher with me.

Wonderful French films! A simple story superbly acted by this wonderful cast, and I wasn't bored for a moment.

However, because of the disappointing ending I definitely deducted a point.

A film about the relationships within a complicated family. Mother has cancer and can be cured with a transplant from one of her relatives. A sister has sworn she never wants to see her brother again. And father has arranged for everyone to spend Christmas with them in the big house. And there are plenty of other things going on besides that. The film runs a full two and a half hours. Initially, those hours are mainly used to introduce everyone in detail. And that's necessary, because the family, including partners and grandchildren, consists of a lot of people. Yet the film is also quite detached, and little emotion is shown, although there is the constant tension of a family where much lives beneath the surface. And what remains unspoken. And that has to last two and a half hours. But those two and a half hours are used effectively to carefully build the story and the relationships and tensions. And so it is a truly beautiful film with equally beautiful performances. The ending is left open. And actually, I'm not sure I wanted that after everything that has happened. Well, this ending definitely has something. And it doesn't detract from the film. Or does it?
