Very mediocre. The film starts well with many nice atmospheric images of the 1950s and a beautiful decoration. The playing is also quite nice with two fresh leading actors, although I don't see that James-Dean-Daydream-Look-in-Your-Eyes in DeHaan that La Swift sang so beautifully.

But after about half an hour it all comes to a standstill. It becomes a boring, syrupy whole where even the actors cannot manage. Many slow scenes follow each other without becoming interesting (the fact that the character of James Dean does not fascinate me too much also plays a role). Visually it is nice with the occasional nice shot (the lighting in one of the first scenes when Patinson is on the phone, that snow, or those bright yellow taxis in an otherwise gray palette are beautiful), but I expect more from a photographer. . The music is nice with the drums and jazz. 2.0*.

Let me just say, I'm proud of myself for making it through the movie to the end. Not my cup of tea, nor the majority of previous Corbijn films I have watched. I am not very familiar with the main character James Dean and the film has given me little new information. Moreover, I missed a certain tension in the storyline.

The Dutch photographer, graphic designer and director Anton Corbijn conducts a film that centers around (what a surprise) a photographer. It's hard to imagine, but perhaps Corbijn himself saw it as a fun and ironic joke. Visually I didn't think his film Control was very strong, but in Life it became clear to me as a viewer that the maker(s) have a background in photography. There is a clever, sharp and, above all, stylized atmosphere that effortlessly brings the tone of Life to life. Robert Pattinson also plays a creditable role as Dennis Stock. Unfortunately, Corbijn and screenwriter Luke Davies portray each main character as a slow drunk, making all conversations and attitudes feel needlessly depressing and alienating. Dane DeHaan, normally a convincing actor, turns out to be a major miscast as the iconic James Dean. His voice volume in particular does not match the source material at all, which makes his performance feel like a kind of bullying. Some users say that the film feels a bit aimless and as a viewer I can easily agree with that, as that was the most prominent impression I felt afterwards.
