For me it was remarkable that the story takes place in Russia because in one of the first scenes people talk about rubles as a currency. But it is less surprising when it turns out that this is an adaptation of work by Maxime Gorki. And that the production was an initiative of the Russian producer Kamenka. One of the many film Russians who fled Russia after the October Revolution. Besides him, other Russian migrants also participate in the film.

For Renoir, it was a commissioned film. Nevertheless, I think it fits very well with the rest of his works that I have already seen. Les Bas-Fonds is another politically charged film by commie Renoir. The impoverished aristocracy voluntarily surrenders power to the proletariat, which is symbolized in the friendship between Louis Jouvet and Jean Gabin. Field of tension proletariat-aristocracy will also be discussed in La Grande Illusion (expanded with the side of the bourgeoisie). Apart from the political load, it is mainly a mix of social drama, crime and black comedy. The acting performances are on a high level - a bit theatrical at times but always acceptable - with Gabin being the charismatic and credible center of the action.
Also visually an attractive film with beautiful b & w photography, a long dolly shot at the party somewhere on the hour and as a finale a homage to Chaplins' Modern Times. Great work.
