Les Arrivistes plot

A colonel who has fallen behind after the fall of Napoleon betrays his allies in a plot against Louis XVIII. He is temporarily banished to his hometown, where he helps a wealthy uncle's housekeeper-mistress hasten his death; then he forces her to marry so that he can make good use of the inheritance in Paris.
