We often see Juliëtte Binoche in subdued, introverted roles. That made it all the more interesting to see her play the role of Suzanne, the puppeteer. Suzanne is a theatrical, chaotic woman, for whom you still feel a lot of sympathy during the film, because you feel that she means well. Simon Iteanu also plays his role beautifully and faithfully. It sometimes seemed as if the script had not been fully developed, which left a lot of room for improvisation. That made the dialogues very natural. It was not always about anything, but that makes it all the more credible, which makes the film very strong. A beautiful, subdued story that remained mainly contemplative. As if you were allowed to watch it from a distance.

A beautiful subtle film. 4.5*

Hmm, what is the purpose of this film I sometimes wondered while watching it. The Chinese director Hou just shows a few days in the life of Juliette Binoche (this time in a somewhat busy role), her son and a Chinese babysitter. It just meanders along, the film goes nowhere. I couldn't do much with it, but I didn't get bored either.

The title of the film (and the film itself) refers to Le ballon rouge, a short film from the 50s. A red balloon also flies by every now and then in the film. I found this a bit forced and I'm not planning on looking for a deeper meaning behind that red balloon .

Funny are those comments about this film that nothing special happens. It depends on what you find special of course. These are everyday lives, which at the same time you say: my own life is not that special.

Finally, very nice Hou again. It is precisely in those small moments that he is so nice, unlike for example Linklater tried so hard in Boyhood - maybe that is why that film is so highly regarded, pretending to show the everyday but now capturing the big moments. Hou really keeps it small. A good example is that long scene with the piano tuner. Special and recognizable in its everydayness. The images of a big city are also very beautiful again. Beautifully lit, calmly shot, fine shots of trams and trains as we are used to from Hou but now in a more recognizable European city for me. Nevertheless, the feeling remains the same.

In my opinion, Hou could have shown more of that, but he focuses more on the interior scenes with an admittedly magnificent Binoche, but that is all just a little lower in level than his observing camera. 4.0*.
