Sukkar Banat plot

The lives of five women intersect in a beauty salon in Beirut. The beauty parlor functions as a colorful and sensual microcosm where they confide in their concerns. Layla loves Rabih, a married man. Nisrine is a Muslim woman, she is getting married, but is no longer a virgin. Rima is attracted to women. Her life follows the rhythm of a beautiful customer's visits. Jamale refuses to grow old. Rose has sacrificed her own life to care for her sick sister. In the salon, the lively and intimate conversations are about men, sex and motherhood. All this between cutting hair and epilating with caramel.

A delightful surprise from Lebanon.

A simple yet sincere story—without frills—about a group of women in and around a hair salon who, amidst the daily grind, are searching for a little happiness and love through trial and error. Subtly portrayed in words and images with a great sense of humor. Additionally, the acting is fine, reportedly mostly by amateurs.

In summary: a beautiful film, and to boot, a handful of very beautiful women. As nadrin writes above, a real gem!

According to some, it is a women's film, but as a man, I also thoroughly enjoyed this remarkable directorial debut by Nadine Labaki, whose second film, Et Maintenant, On Va Où?, will soon appear in Dutch cinemas.

What an incredibly fun movie this is. At first glance, it seems like a lighthearted film, but the further you look, the more you see that there is actually much more going on in the women's lives than you would initially think. I particularly sympathized with the woman who turned out to be in a relationship with a married man. The way she was hurt, especially the moment she was waiting for him in vain in the hotel room, I found very sad to watch. The sadness came across very strongly. Also, the moment she gets inside with her "boyfriend's" wife. I thought that was conveyed very powerfully by the actress. The melancholic music interspersed throughout adds an extra beautiful touch to the whole thing.

But alongside the melancholy and drama, there is also plenty of humor. And that is precisely what keeps this film well-balanced and gives it a somewhat sharper edge. Lilli, in particular, was very funny, no matter how sad it was at times to see her deteriorating and occasionally losing her way. But the hectic and volatile interaction between the women was also very funny to watch.

It's actually a shame that the story wasn't fully developed between the police officer and that one girl who was so screwed over by her "boyfriend" who turned out to be married. You do see something blossoming, but I would have liked to see them get together.. Otherwise, I thought it was a beautiful film.

What a special, heartwarming film about the lives of five women in Beirut, Lebanon. The film revolves around women's dilemmas discussed in a salon. Very relatable, as beauty and hair salons serve a social function in many places (including the Netherlands). Well and realistically acted by the amateur actresses and actors. Funny is the drooping B in 'si (B)elle' on the front of the salon, which appears repeatedly. Beautiful, sensitive music in the background. The cinematography is quite unique in the city of Beirut, with colors mostly in terracotta and beige. The film ends with the wedding, featuring happy, celebrating people, and an open ending... A true feel-good movie!
