The bleeding out didn't bother me that much. Excellent performances by all four actors, with most of the attention going to Nicholson and Ann-Margret. Undoubtedly very shocking in the 1970s because of the language, nudity (at least Ann-Margret's), and choice of subject matter, but we've become quite accustomed to sexual revelations since then (Knocked Up, I Love You Man...). However, the psychological portraits can still be poignant forty years later for anyone who recognizes themselves and/or their neighbor in them. Refreshing use of long takes and complicated dialogue without it feeling contrived. Sad ending when Nicholson has his ultimate power fantasy acted out by a prostitute.

With Art Garfunkel and Jack Nicholson, this "Carnal Knowledge" features a truly excellent duo. Two greats—Garfunkel is fantastic again, as we saw in "Bad Timing." I enjoyed both men, their performances were superb. Nothing to complain about. Excellent and engaging dialogue in a story that begins with a captivating love triangle. The story weakens somewhat towards the end, but the actors continue to carry this film and ensure the plot remains compelling.

Considering all the rave reviews above, well, uh, no. I had high hopes for this film, and it all came to nothing. The plot is incredibly simple: a bunch of incredibly boring people are bored. Sorry, I might as well stay home then, because I'm pretty annoying myself.

The only surprise is that Garfunkel is excellent. Nicholson is too, but as is often the case, he portrays such an unsympathetic character that I find it hard to appreciate him. You'd think he's not acting but just playing himself.

Anyway, I have no desire to delve into it any further. And this film doesn't deserve it either.
