In the summer of 1959, Lisa awaits her exam results while dreaming of studying at the University of Sydney. She takes a summer job in a department store where she works side by side with a group of women. An ultimate good-feeling film about the daily worries of a number of young women who work as saleswomen in a department store in Sydney. This film about growing up and love gives a beautiful impression of Australia as an immigration country in the late 1950s. The carefully chosen settings and decoration paint a striking picture of that time. In addition, the cinematography and acting are first class. An extremely charming film, one of the better by veteran Bruce Beresford.

Nice film in which a girl goes to work in a department store before she goes to college. The film is set in Sydney in the late 1950s. The fairly simple storylines just manage to captivate. All rather on the brave side, but still beautiful. The cast gives the film the right flair and there is also little wrong with the decoration.

nothing happens in this film: the four ladies in black live their lives and the unsuspecting viewer witnesses it. So relaxed viewing: there are hardly any conflicts, quarrels, misunderstandings or other drama; the makers are more concerned with presenting a slice of life in Australia in the 1950s. Sure, there are some themes around emancipation and cultural differences, the war is mentioned once, but it can hardly have a name. Not annoying to watch, but just as unforgettable as a Tuesday afternoon broadcast of an average soap.
