La Dame de Malacca plot
To escape her sad life as a schoolteacher in a provincial town, Audrey Greenwood marries Major Carter, even though she doesn't love him. She leaves with him for Malaysia, where a British colony and the local sultanate of Udaigor live together. During the crossing, Audrey meets Prince Sélim, heir to the throne. In Malacca, the young woman is annoyed by the colonial atmosphere and when she witnesses an incident, she photographs the inhabitants without knowing that their religion forbids it. Some time later, Audrey sees the prince again and notices that he is attracted by her beauty and intelligence. The dramatic consequences are inevitable.
