Kynigoi, Oi plot

New Year's Eve 1976. On a Greek island, a group of hunters discover a corpse in the snow, wonderfully preserved by the cold. Judging by its uniform, it appears to be one of thousands of partisans killed during the civil war, and the hunters (all pro-government bourgeoisie) decide to carry it back to their hunting lodge for an autopsy.

Standalone sequel to The Comedians and deals with Greek history in the period 1952-1967.

A group of hunters from the wealthy bourgeoisie are saddled with a corpse from 1949 on New Year's Eve.

Just like in The Comedians, a character only has to walk out of a door to find themselves in an incident from the past.

It would be useful to read up a bit on the Greek history of that period that ended with the coup d'état on April 21, 1967 and the subsequent colonels' regime (which itself was deposed by a new coup d'état on November 25, 1973).

Angelopoulos assumes in his films that you know the history and also consider how quickly this film was made after the junta.

Furthermore, long playing time, lots of singing and scenes that last for minutes.

In my opinion (still) one of the greatest living filmmakers.

Masterpiece!

Late 1976. A group of hunters finds a body in the snow. Presumably that of a communist fighter from the Civil War (1945-1949). It brings back past antagonisms, tensions, memories, and settling of scores for the visitors of the village community center. No, this will not be a thrilling thriller. Theodoros Angelopoulos takes us back to Greek history from, let's say, the years '49 to '77. Not in the form of a self-contained history lesson, but in the form of small and large events in people's lives. The community center plays a central role in this. Parties are celebrated, gatherings are held, meetings take place, and even court cases are held there. Throughout the film, the body lies on a table in the middle of the large hall. Lest we forget...

You really have to appreciate Angelopoulos's cinematic style, and some knowledge of Greek history is a must. The film is more or less a continuation of, or supplement to, 'The Comedians' (1975) and his Eleni trilogy (2004). However, I did not find this film reached the same level. I struggled to get a grip on it due to the constantly shifting moments in time and the sometimes difficult-to-place events. On top of that, two and a half hours is quite a long sit.

What Angelopoulos actually wants to convey is, in my humble opinion, that the civil war between 'left' (the communists) and 'right' (the royalists) did not stop in 1949 (with the defeat of 'left'), but continued in people's minds. Crucial to this is the year 1964, when the left (communists, socialists, and democrats) seemed to be coming to power legally after all. The coup by the colonels' regime in 1967 was intended to prevent that. With the help of the Americans, who were trying to halt the advance of communism in Asia and had no desire for yet another communist regime in the Balkans.
