The first half of this final part of the 6.5-hour epic is truly magical. Moscow on fire (grand + beautifully staged) and humanistic ideas supported by powerful images. I got a lump in my throat.

Unfortunately, things go a little wrong when we get involved in the soap again. From scratch, something has to be done with Natascha's younger brother. The many dream scenes (with many clouds each time) are repeated. It goes from hot to her, too fragmented. Fortunately, the filmmakers managed to bring it to a good end after they had choked on the multitude of subplots. Too bad that the level of the first part of part 4 is 'lost'.

The final piece was again of unprecedented class. After the battle at Borodino, the cake is not over yet. The exhausted French army moves into an abandoned Moscow. Almost everyone has left Moscow, except for a few stragglers, including Pierre Bezhukov. He observes how the city is ablaze, which in turn produces a few particularly beautiful scenes. Fire can be such a fascinating spectacle .

Story-wise it is a bit disappointing for a 6.5 hour epic and you will notice that in this part. Only the beautiful Natasha and Pierre and his reflections on the things of life could interest me, the rest just flutters around. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed and couldn't believe my eyes at this special film series.

The last part of this historical epic tells of the very brief occupation and plunder of Moscow by Napoleon's troops. This while the Muscovites voluntarily set fire to their city and the emperor did not receive a capitulation from the tsar. Napoleon left Moscow and that was the terrible withdrawal of the Grande Armée in the middle of the harsh winter, during which the soldiers had to face cold and hunger on foot. On the Russian side, the noble families mourn losses, and Bezukhov is taken as a prisoner of war.

Again a lot of spectacle in the first half of the film and the characters played a subordinate role to the historical events in my opinion. The story became unbalanced and seemed to lose all interest in the Rostovs, the Bolkonsky and Bezukhov. I was certainly not disappointed, but after so many hours of film, Volny i Mir deserved a stronger ending, I thought.
