Caruso, a former circus director, travels to Eastern Europe to buy children. He envisions them and their parents a bright future as circus performers in Germany. In a Ukrainian village, for example, he takes 10-year-old Barbu and his 13-year-old sister to Berlin. But here the kids experience that "Uncle" Caruso is just a con man.
