56 Up plot

"Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man"

In 1964, a group of 7-year-olds were selected by Michael Apted for interviews about their lives, family, work and future plans, and then returned to visit them every seven years. The children are now 56 years old and they recount what happened in the last seven years of their lives.

Apted's monumental masterpiece has reached its eighth episode. What is striking is that the characters are becoming more and more similar, age apparently softens and without I would call the participants flat, they now (almost) all seem to radiate a kind of peace. I think this time only Charles, who has been absent for some time, is missing? Fortunately, the sympathetic Suzy has stayed despite her 'threat' from the previous episode and even Peter returns after 28 years of absence, if only to promote his band.

Regardless, it remains wonderful TV to watch, a unique project that has been running for 50 years now. 4*.

Beautiful documentary series in which the same people are interviewed every 7 years (starting in 1964 at age 7, and now 2012 at age 56). A unique document in which we follow the life development of a number of people. Extremely fascinating in several respects, but above all simply beautiful because it is taken from life. Of course, it is best appreciated if you have also seen the previous episodes.

This remains a great project, and is now already in its eighth episode. Not everyone participates (anymore), but fortunately most of those involved show up again. The biggest surprise in that respect is Peter, who suddenly appears again after 28 (!) years of absence. The irrevocably steady progress of life is not always pleasant to watch and of course makes you as a viewer realize that you are getting older, but the tone of the interviews is predominantly positive and cheerful. It is also funny that the premise of the series, based on the ruling class difference in the 1960s, is discussed in detail. Is the series still meaningful and has it ever been? As far as I'm concerned, yes. Fast forward to 63 Up.
