Joel Emanuel Hägglund immigrates to the US in the early 20th century and changes his name to Joe Hill. He joins the IWW, a trade union. Because it is forbidden to demonstrate and speak in public, he starts writing and singing protest songs that have great influence. The authorities decide that he is becoming too dangerous and blame him for murder.
