"Torn Apart. Driven Together."
Alabama, 1940s. After his wife leaves him for Englishman Kingsley Bedford (John Hurt) and moves to England, Jim Caldwell (Robert Duvall) raises his children alone. When the woman dies, she leaves the request to be taken back to Alabama for burial. At that point, Jim hadn't seen her for nearly thirty years. The two families meet and make an effort to adjust.

Good film in which a woman married for the second time is buried in the town of her first husband. Not really a story, but a film about two families meeting for the first time. Fascinating characters and plenty of beautiful and fun moments. Beautiful decoration and a cast with quite a few well-known names. Just under 4.0 stars because the film is actually a bit too full.

There's a good movie hidden somewhere in this material; It's a pity that the back-and-forth editing throws a spanner in the works and has turned it into a fragmentary and rather unbalanced whole. Fortunately, the lively atmosphere and excellent cast make up for a lot, with especially fine roles from Robert Duvall and Billy Bob Thornton, who also directs here.
