For a living, Maria takes surrogate mothers from one place to another along a river. The women are hired to give birth to children, which they then hand over to clients. When one of such women disappears, it is up to Mary to find her. In this way, she ends up in a world that she is only too eager to escape. She has to make decisions about her place in the bigger picture, a place where she herself sees no future.
