Il Postino plot

"Dreams do come true."

The shy fisherman's son Mario (Troisi) lives on the island where poet Pablo Neruda (Noiret) takes refuge. The islanders react enthusiastically to Neruda's arrival and welcome him as a true folk hero. When the local post office can no longer handle the piles of letters for Neruda, Mario is given the honorable task of delivering the letters. Every day, faithful Mario cycles to Neruda's remote home. The postman notices that the piles of letters come almost exclusively from women. He thinks Neruda is attractive to women because of his poetry, so one day Mario asks him how he can become a poet. Neruda is cool and distant at first, but Mario continues to ask. Gradually the two opposites grow towards each other.

The first half is beautiful, with a subtle Troisi, a cleverly hypothermic Noiret, and a plot that unfolds like a fairytale, with the little man developing his poetic gifts and the beautiful girl who falls for him. But halfway through the film changes pace, and then the contrast suddenly becomes stark: the plot drifts forward with seven miles, from a kiss between Mario and Beatrice we suddenly jump to the betrothal, the objections of the sharp aunt are ignored given more, the way Mario comes to his end comes quite out of the blue and hits me like pincers on a pig, and I'm not sure I can call the last scene with Neruda on the beach meaningful ( is it meant to indicate that he only realized thanks to the sound recordings of Mario how happy he was on this island?). Also weird plot elements: I can't imagine that there aren't dozens of horny men swarming around Beatrice, and aunt doesn't like her niece talking to an aspiring poet, but she does walk around with a cleavage that you tell yourself to. It's moments like this that take me out of the film and undermine the emotion.

I largely agree with the above opinion. A very decent film that I enjoyed watching. But for me it doesn't have the status of a classic that it has acquired here and there. In that respect, expectations were quite high and he was a bit disappointing.

Pablo Neruda has a somewhat mythical status with the residents when he settles on the Italian island after being banished from Chile. The locations on the islands of Salina and Procida are idyllic and almost as poetic as Neruda's own poems. The friendship with the postman Mario is also endearing.

The plot, on the other hand, proceeds in fits and starts. The infatuation with the local beauty Béatrice takes a few turns and is not explored in depth. Sometimes a bit sloppy and messy, although the contacts between Maria and Neruda made up for a lot. The atmosphere of southern Italy is reflected in the music. And with a poet and aspiring poet you are of course good with some good dialogues or quotes. Very nice to have seen, but not the masterpiece I thought I was seeing.
