During World War II, Lieutenant Murray is unhappy about being in the navy, preferring to stay where the action is, which is in the air. Unwillingly, he sails on Rawlings' ship, who picks up downed pilots and must bring them to safety. During their mission, they find themselves in an enemy minefield and in the crosshairs of an armed enemy ship. They soon come under fire. Rawlings is killed and Murray is forced to take charge.
