Eye in the Sky plot

"Welcome to the new front line"

Colonel Catherine Powell (Mirren) leads a secret drone mission to capture a group of terrorists in Nairobi, Kenya. When she learns that the group is planning a suicide bombing, her goal changes to kill the terrorists. Steve Watts (Paul), the pilot flying the drone, takes a look at the hideout where the terrorists are staying, just as a 9-year-old girl moves into the kill zone. Powell will now have to decide with lawyers and politicians whether the action will go ahead or not.

Sell your bread quickly or you will die..........

That could be the cynical subtitle of this interesting but unrealistic film. To start with the latter; as if the actual life of someone in this situation depended on a number of loaves of bread to sell. Or two unstable drone pilots who somehow ended up behind the controls. The discussion between those responsible at a higher level also became almost laughable at a certain point. Only Alan Rickman and to a lesser extent Helen Mirren maintained their credibility in this farcical situation.

Still, it's an interesting film because it makes you think. Warfare with drones is topical and so are the associated dilemmas. A film that you will talk about for a while and that may encourage you to want to know more about this matter. In that sense, the film's weakness is its strength.

Mediocre.

As far as I'm concerned, the ethical dilemma is not that exciting, the political wasp's nest behind it all the more so. It is therefore a pity that the film's attention is fairly neatly divided between the two and, especially with regard to the ethical issue, is very sentimental.

Governing is daring to make decisions, this film cites a number of things why that is becoming increasingly difficult. Not only because of a tangle of rules, but also (and above all) because of public opinion, which is actually even more important than actual actions. The key question is therefore not whether the life of one girl outweighs 80 potential deaths, but whether it is better to have terrorists kill 80 people rather than sacrifice one girl yourself.

It could have been a powerful core, but the film itself actually does very little with it, focusing mainly on the sentiment over time. Audiovisually it is not very much, in terms of actors some familiar faces but few memorable characters. A film that deals in solidity, while clearly aiming for more.

2.5*
