"The degeneration of high society!"
After an opera performance, a group of upper-class members have a formal dinner at one of the members' home. The evening slowly shifts to night and then it turns out that the guests can no longer leave. There are no physical barriers and the doors are not locked. They simply lack the will and courage to leave the sitting room. The situation soon becomes more dire. This forces the group of rich people to take off their mask of sophistication. Gradually the group turns into the kind of people it despises: fighting, primitive, instinctive people, hardly better than beasts.

Great film again from Buñuel in which he nicely portrays the upper-class in this comic whole. The film takes place almost entirely in one location, something that always makes me happy. A few nice (slightly) bizarre scenes provide a nice change of atmosphere, hilarity and tension. What Buñuel is trying to tell will undoubtedly lie between the herd behavior of humans (the sheep) and the totally elusive, but in this film everything is portrayed very entertainingly. A film that can linger.

Not the Buñuel that I had the most fun with, although it can certainly count as a satire on the rich bourgeoisie who looks down on the common people but actually means nothing anymore.
It is certainly an absurd situation to come to that conclusion, but with Buñuel you can expect that.
Disappointing are the dialogues, sometimes meant to be funny, but barely successful.
Surrealism rears its head even more in the end and in my opinion the filmmaker pokes fun at the upper class by comparing them to a herd : all meek, one not more inventive than the other, just plain and without much meaning .
