Dogman plot
Marcello runs a dog grooming salon in a desolate suburb of Naples. He is a discreet man who is appreciated by everyone. The film offers everything I hoped it would offer: a staggering, realistic-looking glimpse into the underbelly of Italian society where poverty and crime are rampant, beautiful and intriguing images and an exciting story. The story is simple and clichéd at its core: a bully terrorizes the neighborhood and of all people the biggest loser / sweetheart kills him in a revenge exercise (get out of hand) – the gentle dog whisperer eventually tames even the most aggressive dog in the dog -eat-dog-world of the Italian slum.. But the characters are so 'real', their interaction so fascinating and the story told so well that I was glued to the screen from start to finish. The film is not only a thriller but also a drama and tragedy because the film has no winners, as is usually the case in real life in a deprived area. One of my favorites of 2018. After Suburra (2015) - MovieMeter.nl another verismo masterpiece on which the Italians have had the patent for over a century.

A dog's life... We are in a slum in Italy with a man who is treated like a dog. By the locals who never see it as full and by the bully of the neighborhood who uses it whenever it suits. And as long as the dog does what he is asked to do, he is good of course. Loyal like a dog, but it also has limits if not treated well.
Marcello Fonte rightly won the prize for best actor at Cannes. You can see the impotence, fear and doubt in his eyes. He tries to live a very simple life with his passion for dogs and the love for his daughter. But it is made very difficult for him and although he is in the middle of conflict, he tries to avoid it.
It will never be great, but especially thanks to Fonte and the sadness in the film, it has become quite worthwhile.

The broken man
Hard and moving at the same time. That's the Italian Dogman, from the director of Gomorrah. And I'm not talking about the series variant, because there also appears to be a 2008 feature film with the same name. Although I haven't seen this film (yet), I am familiar with the namesake as a series, and I was initially under the assumption that the director of Dogman was also at the helm of this series. When this turned out not to be the case, I was initially surprised about this. Not only because of two productions with the same title, but also because I find the raw, realistic hardness in this criminal drama very similar. So it goes a lot further than just the same language and the same genre.
But this handsome Italian production is more than that. It is also a revenge story. A survival of the fittest. Eat or be eaten. A dog groomer who is the plaything of an addicted, serious criminal. And who in the end is no longer willing to be his plaything. Maybe you can even see this story as an origin story like the story of Walter White, or as a very dark fairy tale.
Although the final chord ebbs through just a little too long, the pace is generally good, and the time flies by. And that this story is also based on true events, also adds just that little bit extra to the total experience.
