The many underground recordings did not really appeal to me, in contrast to the fascinating scenes that took place in East Berlin. Well made film, which mainly derives its tension from the fact that the story is true. Especially because of that fact more than worth the attention.

Der Tunnel scores highly here and also has an interesting story. Those were the main reasons for me to watch this film.

The story is set in 1961 Berlin, which must have been a terrible time there at the time. A wall is built just like that and family and friends are brutally separated from each other. I personally don't want to think about doing something like that. After a nice introduction, they start making the tunnel, which is in fact continuously all about. Although der Tunnel certainly has several exciting moments, there are also (short) periods in between when the whole thing collapses.

The actors play quite well. The characters themselves are fairly well developed and make largely believable decisions. Only somewhere on three quarters one canter a bit. The way Harry and Fritzi have sex is very unbelievable and what happens after that, is too forcedly dramatic. Towards the end it gets better and it gets seriously exciting. What has been done extremely well is that they manage to illuminate both the East and West side of the wall well. Everything gets more than enough depth, which automatically makes it a lot more interesting. In addition, the various problems encountered while digging the tunnel are well discussed.

It could have been a bit more compact and a little less dramatic here and there, but above all it is all well made and qualitatively above average.

3.5*

Der Tunnel

Fantastic classic about a couple of Germans who for personal reasons dig a tunnel to escape from East to West. The great strength of the film is the realistic and raw way in which director Roland Suso Richter portrays everything, and it is sometimes just very exciting. Der Tunnel also provides an intriguing glimpse into what it was like in the 60s/70s, and the sense of paranoia and lack of privacy can be felt in every scene. With great acting by Ferch, Maria Lara (also so good in Der Untergang), Koch, Krebitz, Michelsen and Kockisch.
