Der Katzensteg plot

Prussia in 1807. Napoleonic supporter Baron von Schranden forces his maidservant Regine to lead the French enemy across the Cat Bridge, followed by a corps of Prussian volunteers who then massacre the French. In retaliation for this betrayal, the inhabitants of Schranden set the baron's castle on fire. When Boleslav, his son, returns to the village in 1813 as a Prussian war hero, he is confronted by a self-righteous village community that has denied his late father a proper burial.
