Crisis plot

"Addiction is an industry."

Crisis tells three separate stories of opioids (painkillers) coming together. The first revolves around a drug dealer who smuggles the opioid Fentanyl from Canada to the US and the second revolves around an architect who is recovering from an addiction to the opioid OxyContin. She tries to uncover the truth behind her son's disappearance. In the third story, a college professor makes unexpected discoveries about the influential pharmaceutical company that funds its research and markets a non-addictive painkiller.

Nice film with three different storylines about drugs and addictions. The first half of the movie is the best. After that it all gets a bit too plot-driven, making the problem of drugs/addiction a bit superficial. However, it remains an entertaining film with a great cast. Just not 3.5 stars.

Opioid addiction has been a major problem in America for years. This film responds to this and in particular to the harmful role that the pharmaceutical industry plays in this.

Overall, this is a pretty standard crime movie. Not good, but not bad either.

Indictment against both the legal and the illegal trade in opiate-like substances takes up too much hay by choosing three storylines that clearly conflict with each other in terms of drama. The most interesting storyline concerns Dr. Tyrone Brower [Gary Oldman] who discovers during a repeat study that a painkiller that is about to be approved turns out to be seriously addictive. He warns the pharmaceutical company that it is going to produce the drug, but the CEO [Veronica Ferres] and a major shareholder [Martin Donovan] want to silence him, willingly or unwillingly. Armie Hammer plays a DEA agent who has infiltrated the circle of trust of a drug kingpin [Guy Nadon] and Clare Reimann is the ex-drug addict who learns that her teenage son [Billy Bruk] has died of an overdose and goes on her own to investigate who is really responsible for the death of her son. Well-acted and well-intentioned, but dramatically ineffective. This would have been more appropriate as a three-part miniseries.
