Good film in which a father and daughter, both lawyers, face each other in the courtroom. The father-daughter relationship is fairly well developed, but also somewhat predictable. An entertaining plot about the lawsuit that nicely addresses some ethical questions. Mainly for that reason a small 3.5 stars.

Well put together; the legal case against a car manufacturer in which father and daughter (who have an understated family relationship with each other) are pitted against each other bodes well. However, I sometimes found Hackman and Mastrantonio to be like two elephants in a china shop with their overacting. It made me nervous myself. The lawsuit regarding the exploding cars and the missing reportwas quite entertaining and exposes abuses in the legal profession.

Disappointing.

Hackman and Mastrantonio play quite well, that is not the problem. That is the story, which is far too drawn-out and far-fetched in its execution - what should have been a very simple story of good or evil, success or family is all drawn out far too far. Had the film sought the conceptual simplicity of a western, it might have become a masterpiece, but with this mess it is mainly a failure. A miss from Apted, right after the success of his masterful Gorillas in the Mist.
