Caligola plot

"What would you have done if you had been given absolute power of life and death over everybody else in the whole world?"

Caligula Caesar becomes the new Roman emperor after he kills his uncle Tiberius Caesar. Caligula is an ambitious and vain man, who spares nothing and no one in his mad hunger for prestige and power. As the leader of the Roman Empire, Caligula mocks the establishment. He dismisses the affairs of state with derision and contempt. He spends his time with sadistic perversions and sex orgies, which also show the contempt for all those around him. Caligula especially loves himself and his dearest sister Drusilla, with whom he has an incestuous relationship.

Such a film about a crazy and paranoid emperor who, among other things, wanted to appoint his horse as consul can of course be cool. But alas, Caligula goes off the rails with too many theatrical scenes full of orgies and explicit violence. It has become quite a flipped film that looks cheap in everything. All the more remarkable is the list of well-known actors who appear in it. Malcolm McDowell as Caligula, Peter O'Toole and Helen Mirren make it all the more ridiculous with their genuine British accent. Fortunately, after more than 2 hours, it is decided to put an end to this bizarre nonsense. I think Caligula's death was the most satisfying thing about this movie.

Seen the 156 min. version (Imperial Edition).

Hmm, not so crazy about this rise & fall movie. Very controversial work at the time with some big names such as McDowell, Helen Mirren and Peter O'Toole who linked their name to it. Many are still annoyed by the (unexciting) pornography, the overkill of phallus symbols and the gratuitous violence, but one also has to place the story of Caligula in a decadent Rome in total social and moral decay. The whole gamut of sex orgies and perversions is the living backdrop to Caligula's madness. The film is not hypocritical about it : Rome was far from a perfect and exemplary civilization.

The crazy Caligula, affectionately called "Little Boots", is played very theatrically and with grandiose gestures by McDowell. Drunk to absolute power and pretending to be a god-like emperor who is getting more and more insane. This film is certainly sick and disgusting, but a society is always a product of the powers that control it.

Ok, finally seen this famous cult film. It's a shame I was able to watch it in 1 day because it was a 2.5-hour version. As expected about an hour was too long. I also don't see that a movie like this couldn't just last 90 minutes, because there isn't that much going on in it. And to be honest, I didn't find it all that shocking either. The shock moments are usually brief in the picture. It is noticeable that explicit sex scenes are still tucked in, apparently added later by Guccione. These are mainly in the last half hour. It is striking that in the film there is quite a bit of focus on the male sexual organ, especially with oral sex. when i had the chance to buy these many years back i'm glad i didn't. This is just very mediocre.
