Syrupy biography in which the trailer already reveals the whole story. The more than 110 minutes that you get when watching the complete film add very little to that. William Nicholson's screenplay has little depth and expects you as a viewer to automatically sympathize with Robin [Andrew Garfield] and Diane Cavendish [Claire Foy] because they love each other and he is seriously ill. Tom Hollander - as Diane's twin brothers - and Hugh Bonneville - as inventor Teddy Hall - make solid contributions, but director Andy Serkis focuses too much on pretty pictures and sentimental clichés and does too little to bring the characters to life. Too bad, because the importance of Tom Cavendish's life story could and should have resulted in a much better film.

A solid, balanced film for a long time. Made carefully and with respect for the subject, perfect decoration, beautiful setting, telling a story at a fairly high level. However, a lot goes wrong in the last half hour and director Serkis goes off course (a little mischief and unpredictability from his own Golem could have helped him). It then becomes an overly sentimental story, a real tearjerker that feels very false. And so the score is adjusted from a potential 7 to a measly 6. Foy is quite good in the female lead, but Garfield's performance was not to my liking. Always that blissful smile on his face at all the disasters that happen to him... an appropriate fit of anger would certainly have done him and the film good, an Oscar is certainly not an option this way.

Beautifully filmed and acted and the time frames are well captured. But otherwise it is perfunctory and boringly elaborated. I only watched the second half with half an eye.
