Beckoning Roads plot

Marquita Shay was raised by her adoptive father, John Grayson, on a farm in Canada. The two travel to St. Louis, where she meets and later marries Humphrey Wells. Their marital bliss quickly disintegrates when Marquita meets Humphrey's parents, especially his domineering father. Her in-laws treat her very poorly, and when Marquita discovers her new husband is spineless, she leaves her husband and returns to her father's farm. Sadly, Marquita discovers that her father has committed suicide after a disastrous financial turnaround engineered by her shady father-in-law.
