Any Given Sunday plot

"Life is a contact sport."

Coach Tony D'Amato is a living legend of American football. But since the three defeats in a row, the future of his Miami Sharks doesn't look exactly rosy. Tony fears that he will be fired at the end of the season by the young, ambitious chairwoman and co-owner of the team, Christina Pagniacci. To save the fate of his players and himself, however, he can no longer rely on his most important pawn, the injured quarterback Jack Rooney. When his second quarterback also dies, Tony has no choice but to hire a young, unknown replacement: Willie Beamen.

I have to say that Any Given Sunday was a bit of a disappointment to me. The story is not too exciting, and certainly not to spread out over three hours. The film has an overkill of busy scenes and fast music, so you occasionally have to make an effort to follow the story. The acting is very good, especially by Pacino. 2 and a half stars.

You have to feel like watching a sports film. I don't think there are any real toppers since it is often about a kind of fall and rise story and everything is presented quite heroically and out of context. Boxing seems to me to be a separate category, but mainly team sports are often sick in the same bed. The plot is often similar and it is not innovative at all. Not this Any Given Sunday either. Visually, it still looks pretty good for a 1999 film. But the one who really takes the film to a slightly higher level is Al Pacino as a charismatic tantrum.

The action images are often chaotic and fleeting, but in real life you also lack eyes to follow everything. Sport is no longer about sport, but about pure business. And that is getting worse by the day. Good to be able to see a few things behind the scenes. Jamie Foxx, Dennis Quaid are excellent characters and continue to keep it interesting to follow the film. Cameron Diaz seems a little out of place to me. The mood setting is good and the viewer identifies with the event, although this happens too little with the individuals because of the superficiality of the latter. Not so at home in American football so that remains a shortcoming, but still liked to watch. Reasonable film to relax. Just enough for me.

Seen it once a long time ago, when the film seemed very busy and exaggerated to me, and too much emphasis was placed on the tough situations. I was also immensely annoyed by the characters of Diaz and Foxx.

So many years later, and with the necessary baggage of viewing experience, I now assess the film very differently. What a nice smooth video. A sensory scourge in terms of flashing images and pumping music, yet it does not irritate or bore you in the least. A delicious mix of over the top characters, mockery and macho behaviour. In that sense, biting sarcasm towards American football, especially the glamorous world of men. And that, in my opinion, is what makes the film so good. It's the sarcasm, the image of the greedy administrators, the towering interests of wanting to take enormous risks and of course self-interest.

Let's be honest, it's not innovative. It's not top notch. But the film has just enough mix of entertainment and ridicule without the latter being especially bad. You cannot and should not take this film too seriously. Furthermore, a fine mix of excellent music, good editing and at times sublimely portrayed.

Excellent film in that sense for fans of a bit exaggerated macho behaviour, ridicule and of course fans of the sport.
