Loner Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) attends a 13-week officer training course at Port Rainier Naval Base. During the tough training he befriends Sid Worley, a boy who serves in the army to keep the family tradition alive. Zack and Sid also meet Paula and Lynette, two factory workers who hope to hook an officer and escape the daily grind.

An Officer and a Gentleman is a romantic drama, a genre I don't really like. But it looks nice, and the acting is good. It's not really original, though. Small enough. 3*

“In every class, there's always one joker who thinks that he's smarter than me. In this class, that happens to be you. Isn't it, mayonnaise?”

Nice. It is interesting to read that Gere and Debra Winger couldn't stand each other during the filming of An Officer and a Gentleman, because there is nothing to notice in the film. What a chemistry those two have, and sometimes sparks fly. Winger in particular is fantastic, and I can understand that she received an Oscar nomination for this. The military training part is a bit off-key and has a high Top Gun content, but Gossett Jr. being a drill sergeant is brilliant. The song 'Up Where We Belong' by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes is iconic, and I can understand that this was a blockbuster.

Solid drama that I once saw before and of which a few things had stuck.

The focus is of course on the ruthless and tough training led by the drill instructor. Separating the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, also puncturing air bubbles and understanding what people may be looking for in such a training. Of course, there is a fascinating clash between wise man Mayo and the drill sergeant. There's a romance going on with a local on the side, something that many say has the upper hand, which makes the film on the romantic side and while it's on the gooey side at times, I see other things.

I especially see a number of people who struggle extremely with their existence and their choices. Sid, Zack, Paula and Lynette are all quite damaged and all four react differently. It is fascinating to see how especially Sid does his best to make the 'right' choice and to be caring, Zack, on the other hand, is typically someone who prefers to reject everyone so as not to be damaged himself, he also suffers from fear of commitment. Lynette is obviously disappointed in life and seeks a way out. Paula apparently sees the grind of a life like her parents have as a punishment and doesn't want to make that mistake. Paula therefore seems to be the furthest of the four, who does not act but knows what she wants.

It is therefore not justified to dismiss An Officer and a Gentleman as a soggy drama and behind the romance and the training there is undeniable that every house has its cross, and a fascinating drama with excellent acting performances by Gere, David, Gossett Jr, and a beautiful winger. Even the terrible soundtrack, a cringe-inducing climax during breakfast, doesn't change that much.
