This story, in which a journalist discovers an honest politician and joins his campaign team, is well filmed and acted. By now, we know that it always goes this way; despite the fact that idealists still exist, as soon as they gain power, things inevitably go wrong. We have seen this in several films since 1949, and otherwise, we always had reality, in which some mess occasionally surfaced.

3 major Oscars at the time, including Best Picture; understandable, although the story will have somewhat less impact now because you’ve seen it before, but the execution is flawless.

A political film that everyone should see because it presents a realistic story about the ambiguous relationship between ends and means/good and evil, and the general condition of humanity. In that sense, it is also a timeless story, just as relevant today as it was 70 years ago. But however pessimistic the conclusion may be, I keep Winston Churchill's quote in mind: democracy is the least bad of all forms of government.

John Ireland's voice-over immediately lent the film a noir feel for me, subsequently reinforced by the prevailing cynical atmosphere, following an optimistic start to the story.

The film is sometimes compared to Citizen Kane, but that one is on a higher level in terms of cinematography and narrative.

It is striking how relevant this film still is. Loosely based on Huey Long, whose fate was different, but who linked corruption to populism in the US in the 1930s. A man of humble origins who grew accustomed to the power he amassed. But there are many examples today as well. The film lacks some detail and subtlety to become truly excellent (and Rossen's boxing noir Body and Soul is considerably better). But the film has stood the test of time well.

Four more Oscars for Best Picture
