The marriage of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta is imminent when Egeus complains at court about his daughter Hermia. She is in love with Lysander and does not want to marry Demetrius, who her father chose for her. Hermia and Lysander decide to flee. When Helena, Hermia's girlfriend, learns of this secret plan, she informs Demetrius, hoping to win his love. Demetrius rejects her. Demetrius and Helena chase the amorous couple into the forest.
