The city of Shenzhen, close to Hong Kong, was renamed a Special Economic Zone in the 1980s in order to stimulate the local economy through low wage costs. Growth is taking its toll: 10,000 migrant workers are injured in their factory work every year. Three workers tell their story: the hope for a prosperous future is followed by disappointment in the workplace; many highly educated people end up behind the assembly line of a toy factory, where they have to assemble Santa Clauses. All three lost a limb while working in appalling conditions, 14 hours a day, seven days a week, often without a lunch break.
